DEVIOUS
DONKEY

I wanted to create a project that involved developing a hypothetical brand and figure from scratch. I wanted to take on this project to further my understanding of 3D space and animation and expand my skills with packaging design, motion, and brand identity components. I set out to design my own collectible brand, and based the first model after a close friend and classmate. Read on to see my process!

All studio mockups seen here are rendered in 3D.

OVERVIEW.

This project aimed to incorporate several disciplines to create something unique and fun. The result was a one-of-a-kind collectible complete with packaging and a brand identity under the name Devious Donkey.  All mockups and physical prints were done in Blender, while the packaging was designed in Illustrator. The timeline for the project was 11 weeks, beginning in September 2023 and ending in December 2023.

RESEARCH/
DEMOGRAPHIC/
INSIGHT.

I conducted market research by analyzing existing brands within the same market to ascertain the demographic profile of comparable products. For instance,  brands like Funko predominantly target the 18-34 age group but extend their appeal beyond this demographic due to their diversified product line spanning multiple fandoms. I noticed that successful brands in a similar market thrive on stylization,  like Funko's distinct look with minimal yet exaggerated proportions. This unique style makes their figures recognizable and highly collectible across various franchises. Inspired by this, I created my own figure series, "Artist Series," modeled after my classmate Andrew. This line embraces the concept of special editions and collectibles, mirroring the success strategies of established brands.

THE PROCESS.

I began with several sketches and ideas to determine the figure's appearance. This is the final concept illustration. When it came to modeling the figure in 3D I decided to make him a bit shorter and exaggerate the portions a bit more.

PACKAGING.

The packaging design was heavily inspired by Tad Carpenter's work. He makes beautiful and intricate geometric patterned designs using simple shapes. I really enjoy the almost "Hieroglyphic" look that is inherent in that design choice, and I wanted that to reflect that in my packaging design as well.

CONCLUSION.

By combining a variety of media disciplines, I was able to produce an expansive  product with many components. This project incorporated packaging design,  typography, illustration, 3D rendering, printing, and animation.
