This project incorporated several disciplines to create something unique and fun. The result was a one-of-a-kind collectible complete with packaging and a brand identity under the name Devious Donkey. All mockups, physical prints, and animation were done in Blender, while the packaging and logo were designed in Illustrator and InDesign.

RESEARCH.

Demographics & Insight.

I conducted market research on existing brands to understand the demographics of similar products. For example, Funko primarily targets the 18-34 age group but appeals to a broader audience through a diverse product range across multiple fandoms. I found that successful brands thrive on distinctive styles, like Funko's minimalistic yet exaggerated proportions, which make their figures highly collectible. Inspired by this, I created my own collectible figure series, "Artist Series," based on my classmate Andrew, incorporating the special edition concept to mirror successful brand strategies.

PROCESS.

Conceptualization & Development.

My process, from conceptualization to final product, at a glance. Press an image for an in-depth explanation of each step.

The first step was to render an illustration of what I wanted the final product to look like. I wanted to capture the most identifiable traits of my classmate Andrew, and translate them in an exaggerated manner to the figure. After some trial and error, this was the look I landed on.
The next step was to translate the drawing into a 3D model. I did this using Blender's sculpting feature. By using simple shapes and adding detail as necessary, I was able to create a distinct figure that matched the tone of the illustration. Slight adjustments were made to compensate for the change from 2D to 3D space, such as the books which were added as a stand for balance, while still staying in theme.
The packaging design was heavily inspired by Tad Carpenter's work. He makes beautiful and intricate geometric patterned designs using simple shapes. I really enjoy the almost "Hieroglyphic" look that is inherent in that design choice, and I wanted that to reflect that in my packaging design as well. The image you are seeing now is an example of his work.
By taking the Dieline I used to design my packaging into 3D space, I was able to cut and fold it to make these mockups
Next, I texture painted the 3D model of the figure and created a final mockup of what the packaging and figure would look like together.
The final step was to bring the figure and packaging to reality. I started by printing and folding the packaging, and then used a 3D printer to create the figure. Using different filament types, I decided to create a glow-in-the-dark version of the character, and subsequent packaging to go with it.
