Ueshima Coffee Co., Ltd.,(or UCC) is a nearly century old coffee company founded in Kobe, Japan. This was a student project in which I developed an RTD (ready to drink) brand extension, as well as a tradeshow to promote the new drink. Using a combination of the Creative Cloud and Blender 3D, I developed merch, a tradeshow layout, and mockups of my bottle design.
Ueshima Coffee Co. mainly targets coffee lovers, eco-conscious folks, and people into Japanese culture. In my research, I noticed they've cleverly included cultural touches in their marketing, like calligraphy and the iconic red sun. Keeping that in mind, I decided to expand the cultural influence in the design, adding more variety. I chose traditional masks for the RTD beverage and a beckoning cat for the tradeshow as extra cultural elements.
I started by collecting research on the company and creating a mood board to establish the aesthetic.
Next I began concepting the bottle design. I experimented with several different ideas, but the idea of incorporating cultural motifs was consistent throughout.
I wanted to highlight Ueshima’s long history and tradition, so I used visual cues like weathered paper and faded art to show age. Researching Japan’s history, I discovered masks used in ceremonies and celebrations, which inspired me to link a mask to each flavor, blending it with the original design elements.
